Health Minister Doctor Ifereimi Waqainabete.

More than 10 people have passed away from Leptospirosis, 1 from Dengue Fever and 1 from Typhoid this year.

The Ministry of Health has recorded 160 Leptospirosis cases, 335 Dengue cases and 53 Typhoid cases nationwide.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says Leptospirosis continues to be a worry for the Ministry.

He says this disease is very aggressive and once a person gets it, they quickly get sick.

Doctor Waqainabete says it is important for people to keep their communities clean and if someone is sick they should visit the hospital.

People can become infected through contact with urine or other fluids from infected animals. Contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals can also cause Leptospirosis.

Hygiene is the key here to ensure you do not get into contact with the body fluids of infected animals.

The Minister says the number of cases for Dengue and Typhoid is low because of the programs they have been running such as the WASH programme in schools, clean-up campaigns and Wolbachia programme.

Dr Waqainabete adds they are working with villages that they have identified which are prone to these diseases.

Always wash your hands and maintain hygiene to avoid getting infected with Typhoid.

Please also keep your surroundings clean and remove all stagnant water to avoid the breeding of mosquitoes.
