As Fiji grapples with a rise in littering, the Ministry for Environment is working to protect the Nation’s ecosystems by implementing stricter regulations, promoting community clean-ups, and raising awareness about waste management.

Newly appointed Minister for Environment, Mosese Bulitavu, highlighted this during the Post COP29 Workshop held at Novotel, Lami.

Bulitavu says they are working with local government to review the Litter Act and are looking into new landfill options.

He says innovative measures, such as colour-coded bins for waste separation, will be introduced, along with educational campaigns and school programs to promote proper disposal and recycling.

He adds that a specialized team has been trained to address the waste problem, which has damaged the country’s image, ecosystems, and communities.

Bulitavu warned that the constant accumulation of litter is choking waterways, forests, and reefs, posing a significant threat to human health and wildlife.
