The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission says it is investigating allegations of police brutality in both, Nadi as well as one in relation to the Nakasi Police Station.

Director, Ashwin Raj says it is a matter of grave concern that a life has been lost.

Raj says the investigation team is in Nadi conducting a preliminary investigation into the case. He says they have been in touch with the grieving family since yesterday.

He says they are also in the process of conducting an interview with the sister of the victim in the Nakasi case.

The Commission expresses grave concern on these recent reports of alleged police brutality.

Raj commends the Acting Police Commissioner for taking a firm stance in ensuring all those responsible are investigated and face the full brunt of the law.

Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has directed the Internal Affairs Investigations Unit to investigate claims of the alleged case of Police assault in Nakasi.

The claim was made on social media.

A woman claims that four Police officers from the Nakasi Police Post were involved in the alleged assault of her brother but they were not in uniform. She says her brother was intoxicated.

She alleges that the four Police officers dragged her brother out of the house and beat him up last Saturday night. The woman alleges that the brother was taken to the Nakasi cell. When they went to see him on Sunday, she claims an officer said that her brother was arrested for allegedly breaching the curfew.

He already has an earlier curfew breach case and is currently remanded in custody.

Police say members of the public can send them private messages on their Facebook page as they are trying to locate the people who posted the information.

The woman says she had gone to the Police Internal Affairs on Monday and she was advised that her brother had to lodge his report. She says she will now contact the Internal Affairs Unit after hearing that the Acting Commissioner has directed the investigation.

Anyone with information that could assist with investigations is requested to call the Internal Affairs Office on 9905627.
