With a lot of movement to monoculture for commercial objectives in Fiji there is a concern for sustainable land use practices.
Forestry & Agriculture Coordinator Sairusi Bulai said there is a need to go into an integrated system where valuable tree species are incorporated and this can be achieved through agroforestry that can provide green manure for soil fertility and crop protection through wind breaks.
In an effort to raise awareness and expertise on the system, four day Agroforestry workshop is being conducted from today at Colo-Suva Forestry Training centre that has over 30 participants from the Pacific region.
