The government has today confirmed that it will continue to give itaukei scholarships.
Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, Colonel Pio Tikoduadua said all the scholarships will not be merged.
The criteria to qualify for the itaukei government scholarships include that the applicants have to be either itaukei or Rotuman.
The People's Charter Council had earlier recommended that all scholarships should be merged and there should be no more race based scholarships.
It said that scholarships should be given to students based on merit not on race.
In an earlier interview with the Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the draft constitution consultations, he told us that although he cannot specifically comment on whether race based scholarships will continue, other plans may be in store for students that will benefit everyone.
According to Sayed-Khaiyum, positive discrimination is allowed in certain areas but he cannot comment on the race based scholarships.
