Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the government has not made any decision to ban certain people from contesting the next elections in Fiji.
Sayed-Khaiyum said there may be some misconceptions in relation to this issue but no decision has been made.
However the Attorney General has told TV3 that there will be some restrictions for candidates that are in place in many countries.
Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji has already said that elections will be held in 2014 and he wonders what other assurances are needed to convince the NZ government.
Under Fiji’s Strategic Framework, the government has decided to focus on the social and economic reforms before starting work on the new constitution.
Work on the constitution is expected to begin next year, and the document is expected to be ready by 2013.
Awareness on the new constitution and electoral system is expected to take place in 2013 and 2014 and elections will be held no later than September 2014.
