With adverse effects of climate change continuously affecting the Pacific, the Fiji government and delegates from the Pacific Island countries are currently looking into a climate change mitigating project that reduces carbon emission and allow economic development.
Director for Environment Jope Davetanivalu said the Clean Development Mechanism project which is currently active in Fiji provides a market based mechanism for the Pacific Region to reduce its carbon dioxide emission.
Davetanivalu said a number of poverty related climate change impacts includes reduction in crop yields, new health risks.
Malnutrition and adverse effect to economic growth.
He added if the Clean Development Mechanism is carried out effectively, it can be integrated into poverty reduction as well as air quality and global climate protection.
He said the Fiji government is looking into the draft policy guideline on CDM investment in Fiji and is yet to be finalized.
Delegates from Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are currently attending the one week workshop at Novotel Convention centre in Lami.
