Vodafone Fiji has already bought 6 lots of 4G frequencies at a total cost of $864,000 in the first ever auction of 4G frequencies on the radio spectrum which opened in Suva today.
This means Vodafone has already bought the right to provide the most up to date technology, putting Fiji on par with other nations that offer the top level of mobile voice and online services.
Vodafone bought 6 lots at a bid of 144 thousand dollars each in the third round held today and has filled their quota of 30 Megahertz.
Vodafone has now exited the auction.
Some lots were won by Digicel and TFL which have been allocated to them.
So far Digicel has secured three lots of frequencies at a total price of 1.26 million dollars while TFL has secured three lots with a total bid of 1.5 million dollars.
TFL and Digicel will continue to participate in the next round of bidding for other lots of 4G frequencies tomorrow.
4G is the fourth generation of mobile phone communication technology standards which provides mobile ultra broadband internet access to laptops with USB wireless modems, smartphones, and to other mobile devices.
It is a successor of the third generation (3G) standards.
Attorney General and Communications Minister, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said with the new 4G technology, Universal Service Access and Local Internet Exchange, mobile coverage will be expanded and the internet will become more accessible and affordable.
