Disabilities should not be a hindrance to living a full and secure life.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said that is the principle that the Government adheres to and believes in while officially opening the first ever centre for persons living with disabilities in Labasa this morning.
Commodore Bainimarama said the centre reflects government’s international obligations after Fiji became a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities in June last year.
He said the centre will provide medical and physiotherapy services, counseling, sports, vocational and educational training.
He added the centre will also be a place where people living with disabilities can interact with each other and feel at home.
Last year the National Disability Survey saw more than 3,000 people living with disabilities in Macuatu province alone.
