Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett has revealed the seriousness of the season-ending blood clots on prop John Schwalger’s lungs, saying it was a “scary” situation.
Schwalger is likely to need blood-thinning medication after battling what was initially believed to be a chest infection for weeks.
Hammett says losing the former All Black for the rest of the campaign was a "blow", but the team's overwhelming emotion was relief as the medical staff identified the illness in time.
The Hurricanes play the Reds this Saturday at 7.35pm.
This Friday at 5.35pm the Blues play the Waratahs while at 7.40pm the Brumbies meet the Chiefs.
