The Fiji Tongan community is now coming together for a fundraiser for those on Ha’apai, one of the worst hit islands during Tropical Cyclone Ian.
Secretary of the Tongan Community Committee in Fiji Eleni Tevi said members met yesterday and have agreed to begin collecting money for the cyclone victims in Ha’apai.
She said next Friday all donations will be tallied with a cheque then sent to the National Disaster Authority of Ha’apai.
She said members of the public who wish to make a donation can do so next Friday at the Api Tonga property which is located at Laucala Bay Road.
A compassionated notebook will also be set up for those who wish to leave messages of support.
Tertiary students from Ha’apai who are studying in Fiji are expected to be back by February in time for classes.
Meanwhile, according to Radio Australia, Tongan authorities confirm that 70 percent of houses and buildings in Ha’apai which is home to about 8,000 people were damaged or destroyed.
There has also been one confirmed death as a result of the cyclone.
