The Suva City Council said based on a waste characterization survey, approximately 65 percent of waste collected is organic waste.
Suva City Council’s Special Administrator Chandu Umaria said the amount of waste is increasing due to the modern lifestyle dependence on imported goods and increased consumption patterns.
Umaria added currently the council spends around 20 percent of its total budget on solid waste management.
Meanwhile, the government of Japan has provided funding assistance worth $89,000 to the Suva City Council to purchase a mini shredder machine and construct a composting shed with a concrete floor.
During the official handing over ceremony of the Mini Shredder and composting shed this morning, the Embassy of Japan’s Charge De Affairs Knizo Nakagun said the new compost centre aims to significantly reduce the amount of solid waste in Suva City and streamline its compositing system.
