The new political movement which has the support of 27 unions under the Fiji Trades Union Congress umbrella has nothing to do with the Fiji Labour Party.
Unions that were behind the formation of the FLP, the FTUC, the Fiji Public Service Association and the Fiji Teachers Union are behind the formation of the new party.
FTUC general secretary Felix Anthony said the congress Special Delegates Conference on Saturday decided that the workers need a political movement and a political party to address the issue of workers’ rights and human rights.
The leader for the Fiji Labour Party Mahendra Chaudhry said that many members of the trade unions affiliated to FTUC have spoken to him after the Delegate Conference and told him otherwise.
Meanwhile, Anthony also said that the council supports the Constitution Commission draft which includes the setting up of the National People’s Assembly and the Great Council of Chiefs.
Anthony said the GCC plays an important cultural and traditional role and the National People’s Assembly is not any different from the national economic summit.
However, he said FTUC is disappointed and remains unconvinced about the excuses given to the people of Fiji by the President and Prime Minister on the constitution review process where amendments will be made to the Ghai draft by the Government legal team.
Fijivillage asked Anthony why has he changed his stance towards the Government now as he was appointed on the FNPF board and Telecom Fiji board after the 2006 coup.
