A New Zealand political party leader is pushing for trade engagements with Fiji in its election campaign.
Acting Party leader Don Brash said New Zealand should not be keeping Fiji at arms’ length as Fiji has long been a family which they need to rebuild a positive relationship with.
He said New Zealand should be working with countries where benefits were potentially lucrative, regardless of the political system.
Rebuilding relations with Fiji was one of nine priorities Dr Brash pressed during his speech.
New Zealand has taken a hard line against Fiji until Fiji shows real steps towards restoring democracy.
New Zealand's 2011 General Election will be held later this month
