The relocation of approximately $5 million from the National Roads budget will be required to begin the reconstruction of 40km of road in the North.
This is according to the Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Neil Cook with a revised strategy now being undertaken by the organization.
According to Cook, after a comprehensive inspection of over 500km of unsealed roads, what has been established is that traditional lower cost maintenance practices will not produce the outcomes needed for roads in the North.
Cook said the condition of roads in the North is considerably worse than initially thought.
Also in order to stay within the approved budget, he added some deferral of other maintenance activities across the board will be required.
Meanwhile, to enable the construction of better roads in the Northern Division, the Fiji Roads Authority held a revised strategy workshop with bus operators and government stakeholders today.
