9 charged for abuse of office

Nine people including former employees of Public Works Department who allegedly caused a loss of more than $21,000 to PWD in 2010 were produced in the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Vaciseva Laqai, Laisa Halafi, Amelia Vunisa, Ana Laqere, Taniela Railala, Losalini Toroca, Navitalai Tamani-toakula and Director Mass Stationary Supplies Limited Abdul Shariff and Rajniel Anitma Wati are charged with abuse of office, causing a loss and obtaining a financial advantage.

It is alleged that these former employees facilitated the process of false payments to Mass Stationery Supplies Limited which was prejudicial to the rights of PWD.

It is also alleged that the former employees caused a loss to PWD by falsely facilitating the process of payments through cheques to Mass Stationary Supplies Limited and knowing that the loss will occur or a substantial risk of loss will occur to PWD.

The alleged offences took place between 1st January and 31st March 2010.
