Domestic Violence against women seems to be a norm in Melanesian countries.
This is according to Australia's Global Ambassador Penny Williams who officially launched her publication, “Violence against Women in Melanesia and East Timor” at the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre this morning.
Williams said for Fiji, while important work has been carried out by the Fiji womens crisis center and legislations put into place, there's still a high rate of violence against women and girls.
Meanwhile, we spoke to some members of the public on what they think about the acceptance and treatment of women.
A reclaim the night march will be held from the Flea Market in Suva from 7 o’clock tonight.
Nadi will for the first time ever hold a reclaim the night march in Namaka.
Vigils on the elimination of violence of women will be held this evening in Dratabu, Nawaka and Navusania and the Navokai settlement.
Savusavu will also launch an event on preventing all sorts of sexual assault against women and girls.
In Lautoka, the Vitogo womens group will organize a get together for women from the surrounding villages and settlements along with the women of the Ba senior centre.
Fijivillage also asked men to share their views on the day.
Co ordinator Fiji womens director Shamim Ali in an earlier interview shares how men are stepping up in the elimination of sexual abuse of women.
