The contract for the widening of two sections of the Kings Road in Suva as part of the Nadi Suva Road Upgrade Project has been awarded to the China Railway Group First.
The project was among the approvals granted by the Fiji Roads Authority during their March 2014 Board meeting.
The total project budget for this work is $30.4 million and though a start date is yet to be confirmed, the Fiji Roads Authority is intending to start work soon.
The Fiji Roads Authority says the Nadi Upgrade Project will involve improvement to 12 kilometres of road including 3.3 kilometres of new road.
For Suva, an upgrade of 9 kilometres of road will be carried out.
In a statement from Fiji Roads Authority, the planned work will reduce the congestion on the roads and improve travel times for local communities and commuters.
Better roads and improved street lighting, footpaths and road drainage will make the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians.
The project will bring a boost to Fiji’s economy by improving access from the international airports to the adjacent cities and nearby areas.
It will enable more economic development such as shops, houses and amenities along the highways.
It will also significantly enhance the first hand experiences for tourists to Fiji.
