“Ageing is a crucial stage of a human life cycle that all of us have to embrace”.
These are the words of Minister for Social Welfare Dr Jiko Luveni in her officiating speech in celebrating International Day for Older Persons that is observed today.
Dr Luveni said the traditional family support systems that we rely on are becoming increasingly strained because Fiji’s family size continues to decline and also due to other changes resulting from modernization mainly associated with urban migration and a high dependency on cash based economy.
She added the policy will be launched in November.
There is an estimated 64,000 people over 60 years of age in Fiji.
