Women under-represented in news coverage

The Fiji Media Watch coordinated a survey on 10th November last year claiming that women are grossly underrepresented in news coverage contrast to men.

During the launch at Suva's Peninsula Hotel Media Monitoring Coordinator, Fulori Turaqa highlighted that survey shows males dominate the three mediums Radio, News paper and Television.

Turaqa further added 23% females are reporters or presenters for Print and Radio stations however for National Television there was alarming rate of 27% female representation.

She added News continues to portray a world in which men outnumber women in almost all occupational categories, the highest being the professionals.

Turaqa further said as persons interviewed or heard in the news, women remain in the ordinary people category in contrast to men who continue to predominate in the expert category.

However, when Fijivillage told Turaqa, that this is not a true picture for Communications Fiji Limited Newsroom as there is equal representation of male and female reporters she accepted that information received may be incorrect as monitoring was done on a particular day.
