The upgrading of two radars at the Nausori and Nadi airports will improve the way for severe weather forecasting.
This is according to Alipate Waqaicelua, senior meteorologist at the Nadi Weather Office.
He said the radars should be ready for use by the end of this year.
The upgraded radars he added will allow for forecasters to better inform and alert the public.
The radars will have a far improved forecasting capability than the current conventional one.
Meanwhile, according to Waqaicelua, the current amalgamation of Hydrology with the Meteorological Department last month has seen an upgrade of water level gauges at river catchments in Fiji.
