Adequate fire safety devises and proper evacuation plans averted a near disaster when the fifth floor of Parade Arcade along Victoria Parade caught fire this morning.
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon Chief Fire Office Mark said with the help of certain safety mearsures, their firefighters did everything correct and the fire was under control within hours.
Earlier today Reid raised serious concerns over some vehicles parked in front of fire hydrants in the heart of Suva which caused problems for the fire-fighters this morning.
The windows of one of the vehicles had to be smashed to move three cars blocking the fire hydrants at Joske Street and Reid stresses its illegal for motorists to park their cars in front of fire hydrants.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of the Colonial Bank, Laurie Mellsop has assured its customers that banking services will normalize by later this afternoon after disruptions due to the fire.
Downtown Suva came to a standstill as seven fire tenders attended to the blaze on the fifth floor of the building at around 7:30 this morning and Victoria Parade and Joske Street were cordoned off.
