Sugarcane farmers may soon see a drop in fertilizer costs as a result of a decrease in importation expenditure of raw material from China.
South Pacific Fertilizers will now save close to 50% in freight cost for fertilizer for Fiji’s sugar industry following an agreement with bauxite company Xinfa in using the same vessel that returns empty from China after shipping bauxite to return with ammonium sulphate.
SPF general manager, Ashween Ram, said the raw material ammonium sulphate is an ingredient used in all the three blends that they produce for sugarcane farmers.
Currently, a 50 kilogram bag of fertilizer costs $45.59 out of which farmers pay $31.50 and the rest is subsidized by Government.
