Market vendor in court for malicious act
A 40-year-old market vendor appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamaza this afternoon charged with malicious act.

The court heard that early yesterday morning, the accused, Ram Chandra endeavored to disturb the public peace by inciting hatred of any class of person.

It is alleged that Chandra made some comments about the Prime Minister, the Military and the Government of the day.

He told the Court that he is an outpatient of Saint Giles Hospital and is still taking his medication.

He chose to seek a private lawyer to represent him.

Police Prosecutor Elina Lotudina asked the court to transfer Chandra to Saint Giles Hospital for psychiatric assessment.

The man is further remanded and is expected to appear before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili tomorrow morning.
