Nadi hammered by Evan

Nadi hammered by Evan
Nadi is currently experiencing strong winds and heavy rain.

Nadi town council CEO Nemia Tagi said that tree branches and fallen power lines are still on roads and they have already taken necessary precautions.

Movement into Lautoka City has been restricted.

Commissioner Western Colonel Joeli Cawaki said they have done this for the safety of people but can still see people loitering around at their own risk.

Colonel Cawaki said most of the people living in the West have left it to the last minute and have been caught by surprise.

He said it is very risky to send their teams out for search and rescue efforts.

He said power has also been switched off throughout the Western Division for safety reasons and he has this message for the people.

According to Cawaki as soon as the Cyclone passes they will begin their search and rescue.

Two families in Tavakubu, Lautoka have lost part of their houses which blew away due to strong winds.

A resident Nidhi Raj said only one portion of his brother’s house is standing and they are taking shelter in it expecting the worst in the next few hours. He said they have never come across such a cyclone.

The roof tops of five houses in Tavakubu settlement in Lautoka has been blown away by strong winds.

Resident Luisa Senibulu said she is still shocked with the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Evan.

She said Evan is stronger than Hurricane Bebe which hit Fiji in 1972.

She said the residents are now staying with neighbours.

In Lovu, a resident Kishan said that strong winds have blown their roof off and damaged the windows.

Many trees have fallen down and they do not have power supply in the area as a coconut tree fell on the FEA line.

He said the river level is also rising and the risk of flooding is high.
