Jasper Williams High School's, Mereseini Naidau has taken the first gold medal of the 2013 Coca Cola Games after winning the 1,500 metres open girls event.
This is Naidau's fourth gold medal in the 1,500 metres.
Naidau who hails from Nadarivatu is elated to win a gold for yet another year and she knows that this will assist Jasper in the overall medal tally.
Ana Maria of Vaturova Koroalau High School took silver while Maopa Tabualovoni of Solevu Junior Secondary took bronze.
In the Junior Boys 1,500 metres event, Petero Werekoro of Solevu Junior took gold, Isikeli Waseaqali of Bua College took silver while Apisalome Vuadreu of Vunisea Secondary took bronze.
Werekoro also broke the record.
He ran in a time of 4 minutes 26 seconds.
The old record was 4 minutes 27 seconds set by Apisai Tuidia of Bucalevu Secondary in 2002.
In the Intermediate Boys 1,500 metres event, gold went to Iliesa Ratete of Koro High, Farisiko Mualevu of Suva Grammar School had to settle for silver while Vinish Pillay of Ba Sanatan College took bronze.
Ratete said he worked hard to win the race and dedicates his win to all the students of Koro High, his parents and the coaching staff.
A major upset in the Senior Boys 1,500 metres event.
It has already started to happen as we predicted that the athletes from outside Suva will clinch the medals from the top schools.
Inia Sili of Shree Gurunanak Khalsa Secondary of Macuata took gold in the Senior Boys 1,500 metres.
Paula Buke of Xavier College from Ba took silver while Epeli Batisila of Natabua High took bronze.
Sili broke the record with a time of 4 minutes 07 seconds.
Solevu Junior Secondary, Koro High and Shree Gurunanak Khalsa Secondary are tied in first place with a gold medal each.
In the girls division, Jasper Williams High School is leading with 1 gold, Vaturova Koroalau from Savusavu is in second place with 1 silver while Solevu Junior Secondary School from Bua is in third place with 1 bronze medal.
The 400 metres heats are currently underway.
