The Indian Cultural Center celebrated Girmit day yesterday by traditionally lighting diya's and singing the national anthems of Fiji and India.
The student of ICC entertained the people present by the dances from the Girmit times and by wearing those cloths and jewelries that our ancestors wore when they came to Fiji.
ICC teacher Shobna Chanel said her students rehearsed for four days re-enacting the arrival of the girmitya's.
She said the importance of celebrating Girmit day for the young generation is that they will understand better and respect their fore fathers.
Chanel said by observing the arrival of the girmitya's helps keep them alive as they took a huge risk, leaving their motherland.
