Chaudhry says 28 day limit is unreasonable

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, who is also the general secretary of the National Farmers Union, believes the 28 day time limit set to satisfy the various requirements for the re-registration of current parties is unreasonable and is designed to prevent them from re-registering.

Chaudhry said the prohibition on trade union officials from taking up office in a political party is to be condemned as a further suppression of the rights of the workers.

He said the requirement to obtain 5,000 signatures from the people in all parts of Fiji within 28 days and to pay $5,005 as registration fee is to make it patently difficult for existing parties to re-register.

The Attorney General has said that the $5,005 fee is calculated on each applicant and member giving $1 each as the requirement for registration is 5 applicants and 5,000 members.
