A survey is now being undertaken by the Ministry of Labour before the introduction of a national minimum wage.
This has been announced by Permanent Secretary for Labour, Industrial Relations & Employment and Acting Permanent Secretary Public Service Commission (PSC), Taito Waqa.
According to Waqa the survey will cover both the private and public sectors and is designed with the objective of ensuring that an appropriate national minimum wage level is determined.
He added that the survey is to determine the level below which no other wages can be set and one that will be fair to employers and workers alike.
Waqa said the other objective of the survey is to determine the national minimum wage review mechanism, which will dictate how and when the national minimum wage will be reviewed in future.
Enumerators will be visiting randomly selected Government Ministries and Departments this month for interviews with officers.
