The Pacific Island Forum Ministerial Contact Group has reaffirmed the Forum leaders their willingness to support Fiji’s return to democracy.
Chairman and New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said this includes assistance with elections provided that the Forum could be satisfied that genuine progress was being made.
McCully said but it is up to the different countries how they assist in Fiji’s elections next year.
According to McCully they have also discussed with the government the resourcing of election machinery for elections in 2014.
Meanwhile, the Ministerial Contact Group is pleased with the progress Fiji has made so far in preparation for elections.
The Chairman said that they noted the expectations of the people of Fiji and the international community for free and fair elections should be achieved through a final version of the new constitution that credibly takes public views into account, free and fair participation by political parties in the electoral process and a general acceptance of the election outcome by Fiji.
