Fiji should have a new flag for a new nation.
That is one of the 27 topics submitted to the Constitution Commission by an NGO group, Pacific Dialogue.
Are Wakowako said the prominent Union Jack, an emblem of the United Kingdom and plaque in the middle should be removed.
He added the new flag should be the symbol of a new beginning as a nation rather than a reminder of our negative colonial inheritance such a racism, divide and rule, and cringing subservience.
Pacific Dialogue also said there is a need for a revision of the national anthem.
Former parliamentarian Suruj Mati Nand said Fiji’s present national anthem is sung in English, not the primary language of the majority ethnic groups in Fiji, i-taukei and Indians.
In addition, Pacific Dialogue said colonial names of streets should be changed to names of Fijians, or events, that have made their mark in Fiji’s history by contributing to various aspects of the development of Fiji’s people and nation.
Other members who were part of the group were Jone Dakuvula and Ratu Meli Vesikula.
Tomorrow submissions will be made based on appointment at the Civic Centre.
The Fiji Labour Party will make its submission tomorrow morning.
