Fiji should remain a secular state-Charan Jeath Singh

Fiji should remain a secular state-Charan Jeath Singh
Fiji should remain a secular state and no single religion should be given special preference.

That is part of the submission made by Labasa businessman Charan Jeath Singh and the Fiji People’s Party to the Constitution Commission in Labasa today.

Singh said every religion must be protected and guaranteed their existence.

He called for all citizens of Fiji to be called Fijians irrespective of their background and ethnicity, however, he said the Indigenous population should be classified as Kaiviti to distinguish them from other Fijian communities.

Singh said people should be allowed to vote when they turn 18.

He also said parliament should be retained and Fiji does not require a Senate.

He submitted that the term of parliament to remain five years and registration of voters should be made compulsory, however, voting should be left to be the choice of every citizen.

On the post of the President and the Vice President, Singh said it should be open to anyone who qualifies to be a registered voter, regardless of race and gender and to be a Fiji citizen.

He said the President and Vice President should be elected by the people.
