Baby drowns on New Year’s Eve
It was a tragic end of 2012 for a family in Togovere village in Ra after they lost their 1 year nine month old baby due to drowning last night.

The baby was discovered floating in a pit toilet by her mother around 7pm.

Police say the pit toilet was newly dug which was left uncovered and was 1.5 meters deep.

The baby was rushed to the Ra District Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. Post mortem is expected to be conducted soon.

The death toll for drowning last year was 75 compared to 45 for 2011.

Meanwhile, with people expected to head out for picnics and swimming, people have been urged to take precaution and to be aware of their children’s whereabouts.
