Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has appealed to trade union leaders of the country to stop their assault on ordinary Fijian workers.

Bainimarama made the comments at the Divisional Crime Prevention carnival as chief guest at Churchill Park Last night expressing disappointment at the petition by trade union leaders to stop Fiji from benefitting from the US Generalized system of Preferences Scheme which has given certain Fijian exporters duty free access to the United States.

He said 15,000 jobs in 39 Fijian companies will be lost if Fiji is removed from the scheme.

Meanwhile, a government delegation is heading for Washington this week to defend the attempt by the Fiji Trades Union Congress to stop Fiji from benefitting from the Scheme.

Earlier Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) National Secretary Felix Anthony said government’s case to prevent Fiji’s withdrawal from the GSP scheme could have been assisted during the International Labor Organizations’s mission visit which they did not take the opportunity to do so.
